New paper - Fasting is not routinely required for determination of a lipid profile

EFLM is happy to announce that a joint recommendation from the European Atherosclerosis Society and the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine has been recently published.

In the attachment you can find a new paper „Fasting is not routinely required for determination of a lipid profile: clinical and laboratory implications including flagging at desirable concentration cut-points—a joint consensus statement from the European Atherosclerosis Society and European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine", Nordestgaard BG, Langsted A, Mora S, Kolovou G, Baum H, Bruckert E et al. European Heart Journal DOI:10.1093/eurheartj/ehw152

This is a pivotal paper documenting the possibility of a real change of practice: it is the first international recommendation that fasting is no longer necessary before lipid testing.

This will improve patients compliance to preventive treatment with the ultimate goal to reduce the global burden of cardiovascular disease.
